My Last Diet...A Weight Loss Revolution
As a Chiropractic Physician, I am often faced with answering, "What
complicating factors do I have with my condition." Too often, the
answer is "Obesity ". No one wants to hear it, everyone hates to
face it, but many people suffer from it. It's the quickest growing
pandemic and it's also the single-most underlying cause of mortality.
In fact, Syndrome-X (aka Metabolic Syndrome) is the leading cause of
death. Syndrome-X diagnosis requires two of the following acquired
conditions: obesity (BMI greater than 30), diabetes mellitus type 2
and/or heart disease (high blood pressure, high cholesterol, COPD, etc.)
My ideal of "Healthcare Reform" is VYL! Vitalize
Your Life!
This is where preventative and restorative treatment comes in!
Chiropractic is your preventative treatment. Ideal Protein Diet is
your restorative treatment!
The Ideal Protein Method of Dieting
is a revolution in safe non-medical, non-surgical weight loss. If
that makes you want to stop reading let me just tell you the TYPICAL
results...3-7 lbs of weight loss per week.
Guys tend to lose 5-7 lbs per week on this diet whereas ladies tend to
lose 3-5 lbs per week (I already know this is not fair so please, no
hate mail!)
How does it work? Well, to fully explain and
understand that, we're going to have to get down to the finer details of
biochemistry and nutrition. But essentially, we are removing
Insulin Resistance (the #1 cause of Syndrome-x). This helps our body to reduce he amount of glucose is stored as fat and to utilize the fat we currently have.
(Link: Why do we store fat? I want to be skinny!!!).
Your nutrition comes from three sources: protein, fats and carbohydrates
(complex and simple). This diet essentially removes fat and carbs and
substitutes only the "Ideal Proteins". By doing this, we decrease insulin
(thereby decreasing fat storage and increasing fat metabolism). Your body
starts to burn the fat it has stored for energy! You also utilize the
protein you are ingesting on the diet for energy. So we're losing weight
on two levels - which is why results are so fast: (1) not storing fat because
there is no carbohydrate intake and (2) burning fat that is currently in the
body.
If you would like to learn more about this diet, please call us to
RSVP to our lecture which is currently set to Wednesday April 14, 2010 at
6:30 PM at the office .
Sorry, you must RSVP to this event in order to attend as seating is limited.

By now you have experienced the benefits of Chiropractic care to your
health. But what about your children? Have you ever considered bringing
them in for a chiropractic checkup?
Surprisingly, the first
stress placed on a child’s spinal column is during the birthing process.
Equally surprising is the fact that 25% of children surveyed at school
reported a history of back pain.
A child’s spine is frequently
subjected to repeated forces in the process of learning to walk as well
as a multitude of childhood mishaps, sport-related injuries and postural
strains. Many adults that come in to a Chiropractor’s office show
evidence of childhood injuries to their spine that are a contributing
factor to their current pain and other problems that they experience
today. This is why it is so important to have your child’s spine checked
regularly for any signs of signal imbalances or misalignments.
Fortunately, Chiropractic care has had many positive results in treating
some very common childhood maladies. Problems like colic, headaches, ear
infections, scoliosis, asthma and even some cases of behavioral problems
and bed-wetting have been successfully treated with Chiropractic care.
In fact, a recent study showed that children under Chiropractic care
suffered from fewer ear infections than those whose parents sought
medical care alone.
=Are Chiropractic adjustments safe for
children?= Absolutely! Because a child’s skeletal system is still
developing, there is a great deal of elasticity within the joints. Light
pressure is usually all that is needed to adjust a child’s spine.
So the next time you come in to our office, bring your children! The
few minutes you invest in your child’s spinal checkup today may save
them needless suffering tomorrow!

April Fools
Did you know?
The modern version of April Fools' started around 1562
when Pope Gregory introduced a new calendar with the year beginning on
January 1st. Many people, however, continued celebrating the new
year on April 1st, thus the birth of the "April Fools'" phrase.
One of the best April Fools' jokes was started in 1998
when Burger King ran an ad in USA Today to announce its new "Left-Handed
Whopper". Though it was obviously a joke, the company said
thousands went to Burger King to request the new left-hand-friendly
burger! And if you think that's funny, go to Google.com near April
1st to see what tricks they have up their sleeves for April Fool's Day -
they always do something fun! For 1/Apr/2010 you'll learn that
they're renaming themselves to "Topeka" in reply to the unofficial and
temporary name change of Kansas' Capitol City!

Headaches
As a Chiropractor, I'm often asked, "How often is it normal to get a
headache?". The best known answer is, "Essentially Never".
But we all get headaches from time-to-time so in that sense it's not
incorrect to say that headaches are common.
The most common way
we handle headaches is to just let them go. The next most common
way we handle headaches is to medicate (over-the-counter, prescriptive
and home remedies included). But we're seeing that in recent
years, Chiropractic is emerging as the preferred
treatment of headaches in studies and in personal experience.
That is because Doctors of Chiropractic treat the underlying cause
of headaches which is always stress. But needless as it is, I
remind you that stress comes in three varieties. They are:
Chemical, Emotional and Physical. Examples of chemical causes for
headache include pollutant toxins, perfumes, alcohol, drugs,
medications, nicotine etc. Examples of emotional causes for
headaches include hard-to-please bosses and co-workers, education
examinations, deadlines, debt, problems at home etc. Examples of
physical causes for headache include spinal misalignment, poor posture,
bad beds, too many pillows, excessive typing/computing, falls,
accidents, scoliosis, etc.
In most cases, your doctor of
chiropractic will be able to evaluate your individual causes of
headaches and treat the underlying cause. Even if there are
multiple causes and not all causes can be addressed, we still appreciate
improvement because your body can handle the rest in most cases.
Of course treating the symptoms with medication offers only a temporary
relief from symptomatic complaint and can sometimes make things worse by
(1) introducing chemical complexities that are not welcomed well in the
body and (2) by hiding the true cause which can allow the problem to
grow and complicate.
And also in most cases, simply aligning the
spine takes out the pressure in the joints which restores normal joint
motion which in itself improves headaches but also by aligning the spine
we remove the nerve irritation thereby giving the body the opportunity
to self heal.
To make an appointment for yourself or a loved-one,
just call the office and we'll do our best to find the cause of your
problem. Remember that any and all headaches are abnormal and
there is no age restriction on whom we can help in our office.

Fun and Inexpensive Family Activities
The market is slowly improving and hopefully very soon we can look
at the economy crisis as a learning experience. But we are not out
of the woods yet! The weather is improving and that means that a
lot of outdoor events are now a little more in reach. Not all
events need to cost a lot of money.
Some of my favorites are
going to the zoo, enjoying the botanical gardens, watching a baseball
game at the Grizzly's Stadium, fishing, nature walks and more! You
can even enjoy a nice game at the St. Louis Cardinal's Stadium, just
make sure to get cheap seats and try to avoid spending money on the food
and drinks there - which means you'll need to eat a healthy and
satisfying meal beforehand.
Laura Block-Steward shares
some of her ideas in an article that she wrote not too far in the
distant past. It's called "Inexpensive Family Activities: Family
Fun without Breaking the Bank" In this article, she writes:
With the current economic situation many
families are cutting back on spending. This doesn't mean fun has to end!
Suggestions are provided for family fun on a budget.
People
across the country are keenly aware of the impending economic situation
and realize reality involves years before economic recovery will occur.
Most people are cutting back for fear of the weak economy and fear of
their own personal financial decline. This means it is time to stop
spending, but it doesn’t mean all the fun has to end. Follow these
suggestions for family fun on a budget and find yourself having more fun
than you've had in a long time. Inexpensive Indoor [Activities]
No matter where you live, the weather may dictate indoor activities for
fun. Staying home isn't your only option. Contact your local YMCA and
find out about specific opportunities available for families in your
community. Many YMCA's have family nights, sporting events, free swim,
game nights, and even affordable child care.
Many local museums
and galleries offer a day during the week that is discounted or they may
provide discounts on season passes for those who live nearby. Contact
the American Association of Museums and see what is available. Take
advantage of discounts and educate your family about history, art, and
culture.
Cooking together as a family is an excellent option for
fun. Try different cuisines and have each person in the family have a
role in building the meal. The little ones can participate with simple
roles, such as stirring, putting cheese on top, etc.
Don't forget
about the classic board and card games. As we all know, there are games
for every age - from "Go Fish" to "Monopoly" -and the whole family can
get involved in an activity that may be more stimulating than watching
t.v.

Fluoride: Treatment or Toxin?
In the past few decades since the rapid fluoridation of water,
questions and concerns have been launched regarding the safety and
toxicity of fluoride in the water.
This is of special
interest to me personally since I have actually warned people in the
past that drinking water only from bottled sources will eliminate your
exposure to fluoride. And it is very hard to listen to the
agencies that are taxed with the duty of ensuring our safety...I have
seen Cola ads recommending cola to children as early as 1 month; I have
seen documentation stating that Asbestos is not a carcinogen; I have
read early articles recommending lead as an additive to gasoline.
These are all things that we eventually found out are not true.
There are still a few recommendations made by the FDA, the CDC, the AMA
and the ADA that I still question. Recently, a patient of mine
introduced me to a resource called "The Fluoride Deception"
(http://www.fluoridealert.org/fluoride-deception.htm) where some
interesting and valid points are made. Though the research
surrounding fluoride treatment for tooth decay and cavity prevention is
profound, so are the implications made on various articles and journals
regarding the safety issues of fluoride.
The topic of
fluoride safety is not one I have thought about much until recently. It is
also something that is highly searched on the internet. Google.com is a
great source to start!
I would urge each
of you to do your own research. I also urge all of you to try to
accomplish unbiased research. Finally, I urge all of you to view
information from both PRO- and ANTI-fluoridation sources.

Spinal Anatomy If you have been to my office,
there is a decent chance you may have gotten a bit of Spinal Anatomy knowledge,
but this basic rundown is just fun information!
Primarily, there are
three regions of the spin. Those are Cervical (neck), Thoracic (aka
Dorsal; the mid-back) and Lumbar (low back). There is also a sacral and
pelvic region that come into contact with the lumbar region!
In the
spine, it's not all just about vertebrae (bones of the spine; vertebra is
singular), we also have ligaments, tendons, muscles, blood vessels and most
importantly perhaps are the nerves! Essentially every two adjacent
vertebrae has an intervertebral disc (just called "disc") and a pair of spinal
nerve roots. The nerve roots convey information to/from all cells of the
body from/to the brain. Messages coming from the brain are called efferent
messages. Messages going to the brain from our sensory cells are called
afferent messages.
The cervical section is made up of seven bones.
The nerves that exit between these bones convey messages to/from essentially
every part of the body. The most important are the nerves that come into
contact with C1 (the "first cervical vertebra" aka "atlas"). That is
because of its intimate position with the brain stem. Messages in this
region go to or come from the eyes, lungs, heart and so much more.
The
thoracic spinal nerves also innervate the lungs as well as the upper digestive
system.
The lumbar and sacral nerves innervate the lower digestive
system, the genital system and the urinary system.
If a problem arises in
the communication between the brain and a cell, tissue, organ or system, it is
most likely coming from an issue in these nerves that exit the spine which is
why Chiropractic works to restore normal function. However, problems don't
always originate from those nerves, sometimes the tissues themselves may be
diseased. A healthy and fully-functioning nervous system helps to optimize
tissue and organ healthy and vitality.

Typical reactions to Chiropractic ...to address new-patient expectation
It is important to address new-patient expectation because in our office, we
strive to ensure we never violate expectation. There are a few things to
discuss in this matter...
Will there be popping?
The typical adjustment causes release of gasses from the joints which makes the
popping noise. Though this noise is not required for an adjustment, more
than 75% of patients will experience the "popping" that accompanies their
adjustment. This can be shocking and sometimes scary for patients as they
might think the bones themselves are making a popping noise. To prove to
oneself that it is simply gas, just pop your knuckle. You will here the
pop then but it will take at least 10 minutes for enough gas to accumulate back
in to that joint before you'll hear a second pop when you go to "crack" that
same knuckle.
Will there be pain?
Many people also fear pain during and after an adjustment. Pain caused by
an adjustment is seriously rare and is essentially always mild and
self-limiting. The best way to ensure there is no pain is to relax during
the adjustment. If you "tense up" during an adjustment, it may cause some
degree of muscle spasm and ache. This ache would be similar to working
that muscle out at the gym. From time-to-time, certain injuries are
painful to reverse. Usually that is only true for one or two treatments.
In these very rare cases, your Doctor of Chiropractic will know and should point
it out so that the patient realizes the pain is normal, will go away and is not
an adverse reaction to the adjustment.
When will I
feel better? Usually at the beginning of care, there is a small degree
of relief of symptomatic complaint after the first few adjustments, but this
relief doesn't always last long at first. That is why it often takes a few
treatments in the beginning of care to make an appropriate impact on symptomatic
complaint. With each treatment, the relief lasts longer and is more
wide-spread, until such a time that there is essentially no symptomatic
complaint or maximum improvement is perceived. However, it is critical to
finish up your treatments to ensure the problem is "gone for good."
Discontinuing treatments too early generally will cause symptoms to come back
and in some cases worse than what it was in the first place. In the
medical field, this is similar to a patient taking antibiotics and then
discontinuing when the relief is there. That can cause the "bug" to get
stronger and then come back with a vengeance.
Will I notice any side-effects? There are side
effects to Chiropractic like there are side effects to Medicine. However,
in Chiropractic, those side effects are usually welcome and include an improved
range of motion, decreased fatigue, improved mood / lowered depression and of
course reversal of disease or dis-ease caused by blockages or irritation to
nerve impulse. Not all side effects are welcome, however. In your
first treatment, you may feel dizzy for about 30 seconds - this is caused by
confusion in the nervous system associated with your first adjustment.
This is rare, usually mild and will be monitored by your doctor.
